Michael Downey primarily represents business entities in civil litigation.  Recent cases include:
  • Representing a major oil refiner in a CERCLA contribution action arising from the investigation and remediation of a former oil refinery site listed on the National Priority List;
  • Defending dozens of product liability cases, including wrongful death and class-action claims, for an international pharmaceutical company; and
  • Representing a nationwide service provider in enforcement of a non-competition agreement and to recover for employee embezzlement.

Mike also teaches legal ethics as an adjunct professor at Washington University School of Law and counsels lawyers and accountants on legal and professional issues. His experience in professional ethics and regulation includes:

  • Obtaining dismissal of a complaint filed by the Missouri Division of Professional Regulation against a certified public accountant for alleged improper disclosure of confidential client information;
  • Advising a law firm regarding the formation and operation of an affiliated investment management company;
  • Preparing ethics advisory opinions for the Illinois State Bar Association; and
  • Serving on Missouri Bar Special Committee on Lawyer Advertising and Ethics 2005 Committee.

A former law clerk for the Honorable Pasco M. Bowman, II, Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, Mike has argued before the Eighth Circuit and the Missouri Supreme Court.

Mike graduated first in his class from Washington University School of Law, where he was Executive Articles Editor of the Washington University Law Quarterly. He is licensed to practice in Missouri and Illinois and is admitted before the United States Supreme Court, the United States Courts of Appeals for the Seventh and Eighth Circuits, and United States District Courts in Missouri, Arkansas, and Illinois.
